How do you build a website that meets the strict requirements of the Dutch central government — and is also pleasant to read?

Dutch central government websites are not ordinary websites. They have to comply with a strict set of accessibility requirements, editorial guidelines and technical standards. The LVMB wanted a new online presence via the Rijksoverheid PRO portal — and that is quite a different job from building a regular Umbraco site.

What was the problem?

Before you can build even a single page, you need to know whether the existing content and documents are accessible. That sounds simple, but in practice almost every government publication contains something that does not meet the WCAG guidelines. Who writes a PDF with the screen reader in mind, after all? Well, after this project the LVMB editors do.

What did ZAAKS! do?

We started with an extensive accessibility study of all existing documents and content. Based on that, we wrote clear guidelines for the web editors and for the external content agencies that work for LVMB. ZAAKS! then guided the design process of the new logo and the template design — and subsequently built the website in the Rijksoverheid PRO portal.

What does it deliver?

A website that meets all Dutch central government requirements and is accessible to everyone — including people with a disability. And editors who know how to write content that continues to meet those requirements, even when we are no longer involved.

  • Full accessibility study of existing content and documents
  • Clear editorial guidelines for internal and external use
  • Guidance on the design of the new logo and template
  • Realisation of the website in the Rijksoverheid PRO portal
